Spiritual Emphasis

Covenant Christian School is a non-denominational school that promotes the following educational Biblical beliefs:

  • The Bible is the foundation for proper understanding of all academic disciplines.  Colossians 1:19

  • All education should reveal God in His works of creation and providence.  Job 12: 7-10; Matthew 6: 26-32

  • Growth in the Christian life depends upon fellowship with God, Bible study, prayer, and service.  2 Peter 1:10

  • Such consciousness of God in teaching is imperative to the proper intellectual and moral development of children.  2 Peter 2: 6; Psalms 119: 130.

  • Students need to learn their present civic responsibility and prepare for adult citizenship with the understanding that government is ordained by God.  Romans 13: 1, 2, 4

  • Students are expected to show courtesy, respect, manners and a proper attitude toward others.  Ephesians 4:32

Academic Emphasis

Covenant is committed to the following principles to enable students to become confident, self-directed, lifelong learners and contributors to society.

  • Challenging academic and personal expectations increase individual student performance.

  • Students need to develop critical thinking skills.

  • Students need to apply their learning in meaningful context.

  • Students need to be able to demonstrate their understanding of essential knowledge and skills, in addition to being actively involved in solving problems and producing quality work.

  • Students learn in different ways and should be provided with a variety of instructional approaches to support their learning.

  • Each student is a valued individual with unique physical, spiritual, social, emotional and intellectual needs.

  • A safe and physically comfortable environment promotes student learning.

Curriculum

Please note that all curricula are presented in a manner that will help the students develop a Christian world and life view. These are the courses for the elementary grades:

Reading – Covenant Christian School uses the Foundations and Frameworks reading program. CCS is one of the only schools in the Shoals area that uses this innovative and comprehensive reading program. Developed at Briarwood Christian School in Birmingham, AL, and used across the United States and Canada, its focus is to develop deep comprehension of literature through individual and small group instruction, visual tools, vocabulary development, and in-class projects. As students mature, the end goal will be deep literacy resulting in individual comprehension. To learn more about the Foundations and Frameworks, click here.

Phonics – The Saxon Phonics program provides students with an incremental approach to learning by building on previously learned skills. Covenant Christian School also uses Saxon for spelling which coincides with the phonics skills learned each week.  Homework is given daily, with the exception of little to none given on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Math – Covenant Christian School utilizes the enVision math series published by Scott Foresman-Addison Wesley. Regular communication with parents is provided to reinforce concepts at home. For example, the second grade will cover a variety of skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication and the concept of division, counting money, telling time, and patterns. Homework is given every day, with the exception of little to none given on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Social Studies/Health – A wide variety of topics is covered in weekly studies. Nutrition, dental health, manners, friendship, the food pyramid, the Pilgrims, Christmas throughout U.S. History, Black History, and Geography are some of the subjects covered.

Science – The Bob Jones Press program is used by Covenant Christian School for science. God’s creation is completely explored.  Some topics include plants, animals, water, air, the solar system, rocks, matter, the body, light, heat and sound.

Bible – Covenant Christian School utilizes the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) curriculum for Bible. Students are expected to learn a weekly memory verse. Different life scenarios are discussed each week, focusing on character traits demonstrated throughout the Bible. For example, in the study of Moses, humility, courage, and diligence are characteristics discussed.

Enrichment – Throughout the school day, numerous enrichment activities are provided such as library, art, music, P.E. and Spanish. In the classroom, enrichment games and programs such as creative writing, computer, and numerous math and language arts games are available to students. In addition, Covenant offers Scholastic Reading Counts, a program that encourages students to read.
